The CottonDB project is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)/Agricultural Research Service (ARS), the Crop Germplasm Research Unit (CGRU) at College Station, TX and it is coordinated by Dr. Richard G. Percy, in cooperation with Texas A&M University. The database is curated by Dr. Jing Yu of Texas A&M University.

CottonDB is a database that contains genomic, genetic and taxonomic information for cotton ( Gossypium spp.). It serves both as an archival database and as a dynamic database which incorporates new data and user resources.

In 1995, CottonDB was initiated as part of a national program to develop plant genome databases for all agricultural commodities. Sponsored by USDA/ARS, it is the first and most extensively used database for cotton worldwide.

CottonDB.org is the new home for the expanded and enhanced version of CottonDB. Migration from the original site is underway and some information will be found there until the migration is completed. The database has been enhanced to better serve as a convenient medium for cotton researchers to access large amounts of cotton biological and descriptive data. CottonDB.org also incorporates and will continue to incorporate other convenient visualization tools such as a Comparative Maps (CMap of GMOD), Web Blast Server (of NCBI), FingerPrint Contig Viewer (WebFPC of AGCoL), and Generic Genome Browser (GBrowse of GMOD). Interactions among these tools and with other commonly used public databases (i.e. GenBank, UniProt, PlantGDB, TGI, PubMed, GRIN, PVP, etc.) or other cotton databases (i.e. Cotton Portal and CMD) are also possible. In addition, CottonDB Quick Queries helps users to expedite access onto the most frequently asked queries.

Currently, CottonDB.org contains:

  • Genomic markers and nucleotide sequences
  • Genes, alleles and gene products
  • Taxonomy of the Gossypium genus
  • Genetic maps
  • Contact information and research interests of colleagues
  • Relevant bibliographic citations
